My dad is 60 years old and has a family history of high blood pressure and heart problems. He has been overweight for many years, and this year had what could be considered a very “minor” heart attack. My mom, brother and I have tried many different methods of getting him to diet and exercise – threats, cajoling, rewards, etc. What can we do to make him realize that he needs to change and we are scared of anything happening to him?

I see over and over again the same people claiming that they want to lose weight, and year after year, they stay fat or get fatter. They justify not getting started on a diet or on an exercise regimen by citing their poor health, past injury, or time constraints. They say they take vitamins and stay healthy through supplements, but really they are in horrible health still, suffering from high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol. Why do they keep making excuses year after year? Don’t they get sick of being fat?
And what do you think would push them over the edge to make them change??? Does it have to be a heart attack? A close call? Or is there something safer and easier to get them motivated?
Please help me understand… these are loved ones of mine and I don’t want to see them continue to kill themselves.

how do I get my soon to be husband to take his health more seriously? the doctor says he should start losing some weight and keep up on his blood pressure medication. he refuses to eat healthy and exercise, I’m at the end of my rope with him! I tried everything with him. tried to boost his self confidence with encouraging words, nagging and even putting him down to try to make him change his ways, but nothing seems to work. we have two wonderful children and my biggest fear is losing him early to heart disease or something like that… please I need some advise.
