Yoga is the process of yoking or uniting individual consciousness and the superconscious awareness. This yoking process ultimately leads to realization of identity, that our innermost consciousness & Absoluteness is & always has been that of God. The Hatha yoga, which is usually performed is the sun & moon nerves ending in the nasal region of the head. They correspond to the ida & pingala nadis- mental & emotional currents- flowing up, in a criss-cross pattern, the sides of the kundalini nadi: sushumna. Through breath control- ha is inbreath & tha is outbreath- and the manipulation of the physical/ astral bodies through specific series of asanas (postures) and mudras (bodily positions), the ida & pingala currents are perfectly balanced and the yogi functions in his sushumna (kundalini) nadis. The yogi is then prepared for deep meditation under the guidance of a Guru. Besides its spiritual benefits, hatha yoga results in the purification of the sub conscious minds & robust physiological health contributing towards longetivity. Therefore, yoga is seen as means to both physical health & spiritual mastery. And because, yoga has had its origin in India and under the culture of hinduism, it is usually associated with being a part of hinduism. I would also like to point out that hinduism was more of a culture during the ancient times rather than it being a religion. Hinduism, as a religion is modern, and all the credit goes to the Muslims & British who invaded India & reckoned the culture as a religion.
