There are several programs out there that will help him the cost of his meds/hardware. If it was Type II then the doctor may want him on an oral medication like Metformin (Glucophage). Fairly inexpensive and should be available under Walmarts $4 plan. Probably needs to get a meter as well. Meters are pretty cheap and you can just about get them for free (after rebates). This is primarily due to the fact that the drug companies make their money on the test strips. I have a couple of meters with one that I don't use (nothing is wrong with it I just upgraded to a more inclusive model with better features). I also have a 150 or so test strips for it.
