I don’t wear/hate wearing a watch, and I only have a tiny one with a face on it so it’s near impossible to know when I’ve ran for a minute and it’s time to switch to walking again. Is there some sort of a gadget that would beep for me? Like, that I could set to beep in 1.5 minutes and then in .5 minutes and then in 1.5 minutes again? Or how do people do this sort of thing? I don’t want to have to look down at a watch all the time. I wear a pedometer, and that helps me keep track of things a little. I don’t want to be limited to running on a tredmill because I don’t have access to it on weekends.

Some pedomteres offer just this sort of thing. you can go search for fancier ones at sporting good stores.
You said you hate to wear a watch, but many offer just the thing you are asking about for exercising without having to look at it. It only takes about 2 to 3 days to get used to wearing it. Otherwise buy the kind of pedometer that will go off for you at timed intervals.
One way could be to play a song. Know how long it takes to get to any part of the song from the beginning. I know it sounds silly, but it works. You can also make yourself a tape (if you have one of those old portable tape players) and create your own tape with intervals you want in there. You can play music in the back ground so it tapes it. You can also do this by making a dvd if you are dvd savvy.
They do make stuff that you can put up on your arm, like an arm band with the exercise options you want as well. Again, sporting goods store. Or online at places like this..http://www.tomaxusa.com/home.php?cat=20

I have to tell you, a watch is the best way. You can get a pretty cheap Timex Ironman watch – don’t become a slave to it, though. Here’s some great info on walking/running programs:http://jeffgalloway.com/training/index.h…
Jeff Galloway writes the BEGINNERS column in Runner’s World and has several books as well. His programs are easy to follow and allow for liberal walk breaks. I’ve been doing this for almost a year and even though I’ve had THREE knee surgeries, I run pain and injury free!
