5 Responses to “Why Does My German Shepherd Breath So Hard When Resting And She Is Not Over Weight?”

  • King Les The Lofty says:

    • She needs a drink?
    • She’s breathing for 14 and nearly ready to whelp them?
    • The air is very humid and doesn’t easily carry away her hot moisture, so she has to move more air?
    • She has heartworm?
    • She has lung cancer?
    • She has just finished something energetic and is cooling herself down?
Panting is either a shortness of oxygen or an attempt to cool down – we cool by moving air over moisture on our hide, dogs cool by moving air over moisture on their breathing passages.
Heartworm clogs the heart valves so that little blood passes at each heartbeat – it is the blood that carries oxygen from the lungs to all over the body. Unlike killing roundworm, it is VERY dangerous to kill mature heartworms, which is why people in heartworm areas MUST put their dogs on preventatives BEFORE they get infected.
Although you say she’s not overweight, I’d probably tell you that she is fat if I saw her. GSDs should be in the lean, hard condition seen on marathon-winning humans. If, while she’s panting, you can’t see each rib outlined by the muscles working over it, she is either fat or a long-coat.

She’s ventilating herself. Dog’s don’t have sweat glands, so they keep themselves cool by panting. Shepherds as a rule, have very coarse, heavy coats. To YOU it may be cool in the house, but I doubt you’re wearing fur…and even if you were…you’d be able to sweat.

  • Is she on Heartworm medication? Heartworm disease can cause them to be short of breath….and many other things as well……please let your vet check her out.
    Good Luck.

she could be hot. Dogs pant to cool down same as we sweat to cool our bodies.

How long has it been since you had her tested for heartworms ?
    I hope I’m wrong..
