I see over and over again the same people claiming that they want to lose weight, and year after year, they stay fat or get fatter. They justify not getting started on a diet or on an exercise regimen by citing their poor health, past injury, or time constraints. They say they take vitamins and stay healthy through supplements, but really they are in horrible health still, suffering from high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol. Why do they keep making excuses year after year? Don’t they get sick of being fat?
And what do you think would push them over the edge to make them change??? Does it have to be a heart attack? A close call? Or is there something safer and easier to get them motivated?
Please help me understand… these are loved ones of mine and I don’t want to see them continue to kill themselves.

The hardest thing in the world to accept is the fact that you can’t make someone change if they don’t want to. I sympathise with your problem.
I have, unfortunately, always been one of those people who needed a 2×4 upside the head to get me to do something, even when I knew I should be doing it.
There are many reasons why a person won’t take care of him or herself, but they all boil down to fear. Fear of facing the issue, fear that it will get worse, fear of failure.
For me, I had a lot of other issues to deal with before I would ever be successful with my weight loss. I am a recovering emotional eater. Food was the one thing to which I always turned to help me with my problems. It took six years of therapy and two years of antidepressants to get me where I am, but I am now in Weight Watchers and getting thinner and healthier (physically and mentally) every day.
And, yes, to answer your question, I did finally get sick of being fat. I have tried to lose weight on my own so many times, but I just can’t do it alone, so I prayed. I didn’t know what else to do. Fortunately, with our new health insurance at work, they are paying for me to go through Weight Watchers. Otherwise, I would not be able to afford it. The support and accountability make a huge difference.
I have hypertension, but fortunately my blood sugar and cholesterol are well within the healthy range. I am, however, 150 pounds overweight still and I have a family history of diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and high cholesterol. I decided that this is going to work this time. I will lose the weight and keep it off. Women in my family have longevity on our side and I fully intend to be around to see my great-grandchildren! My son deserves to have his mom around for a long time!
Now, MY father is another story all together. He is 59 years old, a smoker, and at least 100 pounds overweight. He doesn’t exercise and eats a horrible diet. My mother has tried everything she can to get him to stop smoking and eat healthier. He’ll go out in 95 degree weather and mow the lawn, which is a good acre and a half. The man is a walking heart attack and doesn’t seem to care, so I know exactly how you feel!!!
The best you can do is to give them your support and keep pushing them. Let them know you love them and want them to be around. Hopefully you will be able to get through to them before it is too late.
And, if all else fails, do what I did…pray.
