Watching these town hall debates today, it’s apparent to me that Americans would rather rake their elected officials over the coals about these proposed healthcare reforms instead of addressing the problems with the American diet and lifestyle.
Too many Americans eat fatty, preservative-laden foods and don’t get enough exercise. Too many Americans drive a 1/4 mile to buy a gallon of milk or to buy a lottery ticket. No wonder America leads the world in heart attacks.
Japan, for example, relies on a diet high in fish and rice and yet only accounts for 9% of the world’s total pharmaceutical drug use (the US and Canada alone account for half).
Another question is, will the drug companies allow it? Don’t the drug manufacturers want Americans to continue eating their McDonalds, KFC and Hot Pockets at every meal?

  • Tom says:

Perhaps we should question the ubiquity of fast and easy junk food. We know that it is pure Poison for the arteries but then, there it is under the golden arches at nearly every main drag. Health Care insurance is already unobtainium for those who have given in to this weakness. Those who have problems not of their own making entirely are equally condemned.

  • Amber Rose says:

Doctors have been urging patients for years to watch their fat intake and exercise but people are not listening. Sure it would cut down on health care costs but you can’t make people do what they don’t want or know how to do. As far as drug companies they have their lobbyists in Washington making deals with politicians. I don’t think they care what people eat , even skinny people like drugs. So many people have nervous breakdowns due to their addictions to prescription drugs. Some die also , look at Michael Jackson. Doctors are also to blame for this.

Don’t worry if the government take over they will soon have surcharges for health care if you are a smoker, overweight, have high risk recreational hobbies too many speeding tickets the list will be endless, so eventually they will nail everyone and dictate every facets of our lives.

  • No, you would need to actually get them to eat better and exercise. Urging them isn’t going to do anything. There appears to be some kind of arbitrary hostility to the idea of living a balanced lifestyle.

  • Hater Police says:

Of course we could make a difference by urging these things. Our current system doesn’t reward doctors or practices that emphasize preventative measures.
UHC countries offer various incentives. Some insurance companies offer incentives to join gyms, lose weight, quit smoking, have regular check ups, etc.

  • yes, studies have indicating that smoking, drinking and obesity cost the health care system hundreds of billions per year.
Problem is, it just isn’t a very feasible solution.

  • Jon Nyhan says:

Wow you really are a Masshole, do me a favor and stay on your side of the border and leave NH alone. Leave what I eat and do alone.

  • Urging doesn’t do anything.
We had a health food fanatical bunch in the 1960s people did not buy it.
I eat as healthy as I can afford and never go to the doctor.
And I want to support others WHY?

  • "This Guy" says:

it’s more than just food too. people who drive fast cars. people who abuse drugs. there is an extremely large list of people who are huge risks.

  • VikkieBl says:

The problem is how to encourage people to do those things without interfering with ‘freedumb’ and ‘personal choice’.

  • On the left and proud says:

Your right but are people going to listen it’s to bad but fast food is much easier then cooking a healthy meal

  • Jack B says:

Yeah, let’s start with Rush Limbaugh and Billy O’Reilly.

  • The dude says:

Too many fatasses out there. I say we should round up all the fatasses and throw them in the army. thatll loosen em up around the waist

  • No, most of s know what to do, and yet we still don’t

  • grob says:

Maybe. Maybe not. But that isn’t going to reduce CEO pay.

  • brown950 says:

Of course. Why has nobody thought of that before?

  • ♥Katie♥ says:

OMG this Big Mac is so tasty… juicy and flavorfull… ew, wait… lettuce? No thank you… a little less… yup, put that green crap back in the bag… and we’re good… thank you! Needs more cheese.
Wait, huh? What were you saying?
No one tells me what to eat. Your proposed plan would never work. We enjoy our freedoms and if that includes Dunkin’ Doughnuts, then so be it. You can’t make fatty foods illegal any more than you can cigerettes (which are just as unhealthy as being fat).
By the way, KFC taters are low fat.
