I have recently had some health concerns that I went to the doctor for. I was frustrated before I even went because I just knew that instead of them really trying to figure out what was wrong with me they would just say exercise and eat healthy. Exercise and eat healthy! Yes those things are very very important but sometimes we really do have a problem that needs attention. Does anyone else feel this way?

Well, sometimes diet and exercise are a good start. Many times people come into their office complaining about various aches and pains and lack of energy, and diet/exercise might alleviate most or all of the problem.
But if that’s not the case, you need to be a squeaky wheel and speak up to your doc. Let him know that you’re frustrated and you need some answers, and that diet and exercise have not helped. Don’t leave the office until you get a referral, or some lab tests, or some possibilities of what it might be. Docs are always rushed, so you need to show them you mean business or they will brush you off as a hypochondriac.
Usually those of us in the medical profession get complaints from the other side of this issue: namely, that doctors are too ready to prescribe medication and order expensive tests rather than emphasize a healthy lifestyle.
Many times a doctor knows that a patient’s complaint will be self-limited and the best treatment is tincture of time and elixir of patience. Only if that fails should further testing be done.
For example, if a patient coming to the doctor with complaints of headaches should have a reasonably complete history and physical, then maybe some advice on diet, lifestyle changes, and an analgesic. See how that works. Only occasionally would we order a CT or MRI on the first visit.
i hate my doctor, he lacks to elaborate types of injuries, whereas i have to find out through an er doctor.
somebody posted mentioned that doctors are too quick to order tests and prescribe meds, my doctor is completely the opposite.
i was injured august of last year with a compression fracture, he made me wait 4 months before even ordering an xray, i also asked him previously if he could do an xray and he said lets wait.
but yes, my doctor says the same thing about excersice and eating healthier because i have high tryglercides….i try to eat better and excersice even with my injury
point is, imo, ur lucky if u have a good doctor
yes dude (Cole )
Fortunately…as general advice its good…but for specific hurts…stresses or pain…of all kinds it’s kinda annoying…I hear it all the time…way ‘too much’…its’ all I ever hear from my dad…basically…they gotta hit ya where yer weakest…and yer body…exterior…is most reaily seen…avoid them if ya can…get the help somewhere else or from another kinda expert if ya can easily…
Remember their only doing a job like any body else…THEY ARE NOT YOUR CONSCIENCE…ignore all negative talk and images…it’s not healthy…lol….
They’re trying ta deal wid their own insecurities too…every man is….and healthy woman too…No human being can define ya besides yerself….so accept only positive people and words and images and yer brain and body will be fine..short term and long…and ya’ll more fun too…Nobody defines me..but me… and da big dude upstairs…
he’s always positive…
Keep on keeping on. Be strong.
No.
Because it IS.
the MOST COMMON CAUSE of disease in the United State is obesity. Cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure (strokes and heart attacks), even Alzheimer’s, can be traced back to obesity.
And the answer to obesity is exercise and diet.
That means that there are only a relatively small number of problems that are NOT related to obesity — like the common cold, automobile accidents, and environmental issues.
lol, but is the answer to almost everything that ails you! it can prevent so many things as well!
no doctor has ever told me that diet and excercise where the answer to my problems.
Yes, because I do eat healthy and get exercise, always have, and my medical problem is a result of my endocrine system not working properly. I have had to self-help myself to better health because my doctor(s) offers nothing more than saying that I need to lose weight. She told me to cut down on soda/juice and sweets, which I already do not eat, and gave me a high carb lowfat diet that actually made me lethargic and depressed – and made me gain weight. Part of my condition is insulin resistance, and she and her one size fits all diet made me worse/sicker.
We go to them for help. Would it kill them to listen?
I had to search online and in books to get the help I needed. That is pathetic and my doctor should be ashamed of herself. Sometimes all they see is a fat person – can they not put it together and see that the weight is a symptom – not a cause of the underlying problem?
Doctors need to listen, first and foremost. If they make up their minds before they listen just so they can pigeonhole you into a category (that you may not belong in) – they have failed to help. And they are supposed to help. “First do no harm”
I do not enjoy being treated like a hypochondriac – I have more information about what is wrong than just my weight. Patients are people. Sizing them up at a glance is arrogant and helps no one.
I totally sympathize.
